Fiftieth Anniversay Celebrations, 2001

In 1951, the McCowan farm was being subdivided. Some houses were occupied and many others were under construction. Some of the new local people wanted to start a United Church and the Cliffcrest congregation was organized later that year. Initially they met in the brand new H.A. Halbert Public School on McCowan Road. Their own sanctuary was dedicated in 1954.

Fortieth Anniversary Celebrations

In May 1954 the United Church people of the community gathered to dedicate and consecrate the Sanctuary and Christian Education wing. That was the culmination of three years of preparation and planning, the congregation having been started in 1951.

To commemorate the fortieth anniversary of the Sanctuary in 1994, special services are planned:

May 1	A celebration of the past 40 years.
May 8	Cliffcrest now: a recognition of present-day activities and worship.
May 15	The Church of the future: a peak into the 21st century with joy, hope and faith.

Why are the early 50’s so important? Because in the space of a short five years (1950 to 1955), the Cliffcrest area swung over from rural to urban. Part of that swing was the formation of Cliffcrest United Church. Without a church building until 1954, the congregation was formed in 1951 and worshipped in the brand new H.A. Halbert School. It is not an exaggeration to say that the school and the Church created the Cliffcrest Community that we know today.

So, here now in the beginning of the 21^st Century, we see School and Church together sharing programs, staff and resources. From the stance of the Church, the Community Centre (itself a spin-off in the 1970s from the mission of the Church) has built a solid foundation of reaching out to the community around us.

We rejoice in being able to celebrate this special Anniversary Year and salute all those working so hard to make it memorable.
