World History

I can't overstate the importance of accurate surveys of your property... so, 'nuff said, at least for now!

The Old Geodetic Survey Tower

Scarboro Heights has a profound historic connection with geodetic surveying in this part of southern Ontario.

We moved here to Scarborough Heights Boulevard in 1959. In 1962 we were making an addition to the house, so we had a backhoe in. Mr. Harold McCowan who lived a few houses away came walking by and said "You know, you're going to hit a footing from the old survey tower..." Sure enough, a couple of scoops later, the backhoe did strike the old footing. Mr. McCowan explained that the survey or relay tower had been built here because it was the highest point on the Scarborough Bluffs. I wish now that I'd taken a picture of the old footing.

The "Back-Forty" Turns up a Relic

How 'bout that! I (and my family) have lived right across the road at 9 Scarborough Heights Blvd. since July 1 1951. Ours was one of the first half dozen houses on the street. We have seen a lot of changes in 50 years. In the early '50s, I was digging in the backyard and unearthed one of those century-old square-headed nails. I considered it a worthy find and conversation piece, so I glued it to the side of the kitchen cupboard -- it's still there!
