FRED STYLES

New to the Café but definitely not new to music.

He was born in Collingwood and left home at 15 to sing in nightclubs. After ten years of kicking around the world Fred decided to go to university and enter the ministry. As part of his preparation for this he spent two years in New York doing a Masters degree at Union Seminary on Broadway, touring with the Union players up and down the eastern seaboard of the U.S. His music has continued to part of his ministry through the years, as well as a major part of his life generally. He has also led six trips to the third world with Habitat for Humanity, building housing with and for people in Haiti, Peru, Guatemala and Mexico and he has written seven books that sell internationally, as well as music that has been used around the world. Fred celebrates his annual fiftieth birthday every year with a big party. He says the secret of staying young is to find an age you like and just stick with it. Fred is a very versatile and talented singer with a repertoire of many styles of music. Definitely an evening not to be missed.

Friday, October 10, 7 pm
Angela Haskill

We are excited to have Angela return to Sentimental Journey. She is a warm and talented performer. After studying classical music, Angela realized that she was most comfortable singing and sharing her own songs and ideas. Soul searching is something Angela knows a lot about. After spending time as a "street musician" on Sparks Street in Ottawa and developing her skills as a songwriter, plans were set in motion to record her music. We can now share her experiences with the stories told on her first CD, "Awakenings". While Angela's influences range from Stevi Nicks and Allison Kraus to Terri Clark and the Dixie Chicks, her music is hard to stylize, beyond saying that it has a little Celtic flair mixed with the playfulness of some light bluegrass. Her music   definitely has a roots feel!

Mayfire Music Festival
May 23, 2004

On May 23, 2004, Ardeleana and Fem-Ergy present the first annual Mayfire Music Festival, a day celebrating the classical relationship between words and music.

The festival takes place from 10:00 am –10:00 pm at WhereAngelsGather Tea and Things at the Sentimental Journey Centre on Highway 48, 3 km north of the Ravenshoe Road, on the west side, just south of Sutton, Ontario. This unique event centre has more interesting stuff in it than you find almost anywhere! AND...the food is fabulous. Jazz by the pond...classics in the cafe...pet parade by the old Ferris wheel....music theatre for kids by the grove....nature walk and craft centre....sound like fun?

There will also be performances at the wonderfully creative and ecclectic Blue Willow Butterfly Conservatory and Garden Centre ...the adjacent property. Enjoy a cappocino while you listen to the storytellers and musicians by the ornamental waterfall in their pine forest!

Chamber music by the Ardeleana Trio, (Brenda Muller, director and cello, Catherine Maguire, piano, Angela Hammar, flute) and their many musical friends will include works by Ravel, Mendelssohn, Farrenc, Frank, Gaubert, Beethoven and several Canadian composers. Ardeleana vocalists Nancy Delong, mezzo-soprano, and Lilac Cana, soprano will be performing with the trio, as well as with their a-cappella ensemble, the Strolling Divas.

Ardeleana’s guests will include Susan Barak, violin, Craig Winters, piano, and Broche a Foin jazz quartet (Northern Ontario’s finest, and first all original jazz ensemble), storytellers from The Newmarket Story Tree, the Voices of Georgina Choir, York Region Community Choir, and other acclaimed classical and jazz musicians. A Poet’s Grove will feature poetry by Canadian poets, read with improvised music, and hosted by Patricia Keeney, award winning poet and York University professor. Bring your poems and join in!

Indoor and outdoor facilities, three stages, an award for the Best Dressed Pet followed by a Pet Musical Parade led by the Strolling Divas (yes, they do the Cat Duet), the award-winning children’s musical story theatre, Melissa’s Song by Brenda Muller, as well as a Poets’ Corner with an open mike, make this a day packed with music, stories and fun.

An evening Gala Dinner and Cabaret Concert will feature Cabaret Songs from Ardeleana’s most recent CD release, Wolf at My Door. Tickets for the dinner must be reserved in advance.

Mayfire Music Festival is also hosting a "junk story-writing contesst" open to any student or adult in the north end of York Region. The story competition honours the opening of the Garage Sale Season, and must be about a piece of junk. The winning story will be performed and recorded live by a professional storyteller from the Newmarket Storytree at the Mayfire Music Festival.

Mayfire Music Festival's Daytime Pass ends at 4:00 p.m. The Quiet Hours, from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m., will include appetizers and stories, poetry and books for those staying for the evening events. At 6:00 pm there will be a Gala Dinner followed by a Cabaret Concert of songs from Ardeleana’s latest CD, Wolf at My Door.
