Port Union Flier is
Awarded O.B.E.

Wing Commander Clare L. Annis on Ottawa Air Staff

Pickering, Jan. 5 -- Wing Comander Clare L. Annis, 30, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Annis, Port Union, was among those included in the New Year's honors list. He was made an officer of the Order of the British Empire.

Born at Port Union, Wing Commander Annis attended Scarboro Collegiate and University of Toronto. He enlisted in the R.C.A.F in 1936 shortly after graduation as a member of the permanent force.

Wing Commander Annis trained at Camp Borden where he became a pilot officer. He then was moved to Uplands, Ottawa, and later Trenton where he taught night flying. Following a special course in Trenton, he moved to Calgary in the capacity of armament officer.

In 1939, he went to Halifax with his squadron, remaining there as armament officer of the Eastern Air Command until February, 1942. He then took the post of squadron leader at Gander, Newfoundland.

Wing Commander Annis has now joined the air staff of Ottawa. In  1939 at Halifax he married Miss Fern Atkinson of Calgary. He and Mrs. Annis are now residing in Ottawa with their two-year old son, Douglas Warren.
